BIO
Dr. Mirza is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Occupational Therapy and Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has an interdisciplinary background in occupational therapy, disability studies, and health services and outcomes research. Her overarching research agenda addresses health service innovations to reduce disparities experienced by ethnic minority families dealing with disability and chronic health conditions. For more than 15 years, Dr. Mirza has worked with refugee communities in the Chicagoland area in a research and service capacity. She has served as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on a series of grants focusing on the service needs of refugees with disabilities, including grants from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research. Dr. Mirza served on the Illinois Refugee Health Taskforce from 2013 until 2020 and currently co-chairs the International Special Interest Group Refugee Empowerment Task Force at the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.
